Cummunities of Belief: Cultural and Social Tension in Early Modern France - Robin Briggs Witchcraft and the Community in France and French-speaking Europe

Briggs approaches this subject via social history and cultural anthropology, challenging the traditional historiography that defines belief in witches in terms of ignorance and superstition and focusing instead on a nexus of beliefs and practices rooted in local society. Like Keith Thomas, Briggs argues that persecution of witches was powered by local tensions, with political and religious authorities authorizing but not motivating.
